This only ever happened to me one time but I have never been able to find a clear answer on it. I woke up from having a bad dream and was immediately feeling like I was being suffocated. I started coughing, felt dizzy, my heart was racing and I have the feeling of dread come over me. I didn’t know it was a panic attack until things started to calm down. I am wondering if this could have started in my sleep and woke me up or if it came on that fast?

Yeah, you can, they are called nocturnal panic attacks. I think some experts compare and contrast them with sleep paralysis. I have not experienced that but there are similarities in the brain apparently. These kinds of panic attacks are not as common but some people do experience them more frequently.
